iPhone Liquid Spill Water Damage Repair

If you have been one of those users who has dropped their iPhone in water and quickly picked it up like nothing happened, then you must read this. Apple iPhones have a rating of IP67 and iP87 from iPhone 7 models onwards. However splash, water, and dust resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. However, these ratings in no way mean that the iPhone that you own are waterproof.

The following iPhone models are resistant to accidental spills from common liquids, such as soda, beer, coffee, tea, and juice.

  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max,
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation),
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max,
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR

What should I do if my iPhone gets wet?

If you happen to spill any liquid other than water on your iPhone, firstly do not plug the charger into your iPhone. Rinse the affected area with tap water carefully if the liquid is anything other than water. Wipe off your iPhone with a soft, lint-free cloth, such as a cloth with which you clean your glasses.

Make sure there is no liquid or water present when you open the SIM tray. Most likely the liquid enters the iPhones through the sim tray and the ear piece.

If you have somehow dropped liquid near the charging connector, make sure you gently tap the iPhone against your hand with the Lightning connector facing down to remove excess liquid. Place your iPhone in front of a fan blowing cool air directly into the Lightning connector to help the drying process.

Do not dry your iPhone using any kind of heat source or by inserting any a foreign object, such as a cotton swab or a paper towel, into the Lightning connector. This might leave cotton or paper particles in the connector which might affect the charging of the iPhone.

Try avoiding suggestions recommended online by placing your iPhone in a rice bag or heating the iPhone with a dryer or any external heating source. You will most likely end up using your iPhone for a few days and later the water inside would corrode the components which in turn might cause larger damage.

It is always recommended to switch off your iPhone and take it to a reliable service to have it cleaned inside out using IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and a proper ultrasonic cleaner should be used to remove the salt and minerals deposition on the iPhone motherboard components.

What should I keep in mind to prevent severe iPhone liquid damage?

Avoid using your iPhone while you are:

  • Swimming, bathing or any sort of water sports where the iPhone is most likely to be exposed to water or liquid for a long duration.
  • Near steam or in a sauna room. Using your iPhone in humid conditions increases the chances for the water particles to enter the iPhone and activate the Liquid Contact Indicator placed inside the iPhone. These indicators confirm the presence of water inside the iPhone and the Authorised iPhone service centres will consider the warranty to be void.

Glass only replacement is possible, you have machines available just to do that. However, the process to replace the glass is completely manual and does not come with warranty. Over time the replaced glass will start forming bubbles between the lcd and the glass and you will end up with a screen having touch issues. We, therefore, do not provide iPhone glass replacement service and simply replace the screen. In case glass replacement is the only service that a customer wants, they can look for local repair shops that might provide such service. Please note, none of the vendors will be providing any warranty on glass replacement which itself proves that the vendors themselves do not trust their workmanship.

If your iPhone lcd and glass has no physical damage and your touch screen is not responding, it could be a hardware related issue. There is a good chance that your iPhone touch IC needs to be replaced. Such an issue is very common in iPhone 6/6s/7/7Plus models. Soldrit undertakes such repair and provides chip level / board level services to other repair service centres.

It’s very important to note that the warranty usually does NOT cover physical damage or accidental damage. Broken or cracked glass displays are usually not covered under warranty, not even by the OEMs.

Using rice to fix iPhone water damage is a common myth. While placing a water-damaged iPhone in rice may absorb some moisture, it’s not an effective solution. Rice cannot prevent corrosion or repair internal damage caused by water. It’s best to power off the device, dry it gently with a cloth, and seek professional repair services as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
