iPhone Motherboard Repair

What is a Logic Board and how different is it from the motherboard?

For starters, any iPhone consists of a display assembly, battery, smaller parts such as camera, speaker, mic, sensors, and smaller connectivity flex cables, and the Main board which drives all these I/O units. Well, the main board is also known as the motherboard or the Logic board.

What are the Common iPhone Motherboard Issues?

Apple as a brand has been fairly regular in launching an iPhone every year. This is a direct result of the competition that is always catching up and launching multiple models in a year itself. Well to keep up with the rate of launching an iPhone every year comes an additional burden of design defects. Due to such design defects in any specific model there could be certain issues which will be fairly common in a particular model globally. Therefore, the iPhone also has common hardware issues which are only pertaining to specific models. Below we have tried to list down a few hardware issues that are usually seen in specific models apart from issues due to externalities.

  1. Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s had users struggle with the network issue resulting in either no network or either the sim was not getting detected or the wifi button in the wifi settings will be disabled. This network issue had a common hardware fix of replacing the baseband IC which is usually shorted.
  2. Apple iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s had a very common issue which perturbed the users. The iPhone will not turn on, it looked like a battery issue which needed a replacement however it turns out to be either the charging IC issue or the power management IC issue or a malfunctioned baseband IC.
  3. Apple iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus model has a very unique issue with no audio output during a call. The audio mute, speaker buttons on a call are disabled and the other party will not be able to hear the user. The recorder app will not record any voice memos. This is a common audio IC issue and a replacement of this audio IC fixes such audio issue.
  4. The Apple iPhone X series has a common issue with the charging IC. The iPhone will stop charging and will go dead. In such a condition it’s very hard to determine the issue. Whether it is the battery or the adapter which is at fault is very hard to determine. The usual culprit is the charging IC. From the launch of iPhone X and onwards, Apple changed the board architecture and introduced the sandwich boards which are very tricky to open and usually local stores are ill-equipped to open the boards or to put back the boards with all the solder connections intact. Therefore, even a shorted VDD main connection, which is usually a common culprit for a dead iPhone X, opening the sandwich board is a complex task. If your go-to technician who might be an ‘expert’ with display or battery replacement service will not risk opening the board. Such experts do take Soldrit services and get their repair jobs done. We do offer our services to other repair stores not only in Bengaluru but from outstation service centres as well.

How much does an iPhone motherboard repair or ‘Logic’ Board repair cost?

We wish we could give out a fixed price for such repairs. Mostly it’s not just an IC that gets damaged, it would probably be multiple components that will get fried along with the ICs. It’s hard to determine the cost of components that get damaged as all hardware cases are unique.

We can certainly give you an estimated cost to repair your iPhone motherboard post-diagnosis. You can decide whether you would like to go with the repair or if the cost to repair doesn’t fit your budget then you can deny the repair and just pay the basic diagnosis charges.

What is the Quality of Display being used for my iPhone screen replacement?

First things first, Apple does not manufacture displays for its iPhone. Nearly all iPhone displays are manufactured by Samsung or other certified manufacturers, who supply displays to iPhone manufacturers such as Foxconn and others. Displays for iPhones are available in many qualities. What differentiates in quality is the process of manufacturing. The parts mentioned above can either be hand bonded or machine bonded. The quality assurance process set up by the manufacturer is an important factor in producing quality displays.

Soldrit has always been very careful in choosing the parts being used for their customers. We have tried and tested different quality displays before selecting a quality suitable for our customers. The displays that we use are not in any case original displays, however, they are very close to the originals in performance. You may not be able to make the difference with a naked eye. Even the best of the processes set up by companies have an error percentage, which we firstly acknowledge and thereby provide a 12 months warranty on the display, in case any manufacturing defects do occur in the displays we use.

It’s very important to note that the warranty usually does NOT cover physical damage or accidental damage. Broken displays are usually not covered under warranty, even by the OEMs.

Certainly, if the previous vendor has left it in a condition to be repaired. We do receive similar such cases. We receive orders from other repair stores who before sending to us try to repair your iPhone. But mostly just experiment and just send us the tampered cases which in a way is a waste of our time. Almost 50-60% of hardware cases coming to us previously diagnosed by some other vendor are beyond repair cases. Either the CPU would have been heated up, or the complete board would have been shorted and completely dead beyond recovery. More than few cases will have missing components. But the good news is that we are successful in recovering and repairing 40-50% of previously attended cases.

Most certainly not. Your data is stored in a memory chip (NAND Flash Memory) and we do not perform any repairs pertaining to the memory chip. Any hardware repairs being performed do not pose any threat to your data unless the memory chip is itself damaged or the CPU is cracked, which does happen sometimes. Again, be very careful in handing over a dead iPhone to a local vendor as you may not be able to determine whether any component is missing from your iPhone, as it was already dead at the time of handing over.
